PVMBG Records 18 Eruptions at Mount Anak Krakatau Since 2 July 2026

Serang (ANTARA) - The Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has recorded at least 18 eruptions of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait since 2 July 2026.

Rio Bonik Situmorang, an officer at the PVMBG Anak Krakatau Volcano Observation Post, speaking in Serang on Sunday, said that although the volcano’s activity has been quite high in recent days, its status remains at Level III, or Standby.

“There has been no eruption today. However, in the days before, starting from 2 July, around 18 eruptions were recorded up until yesterday,” he said.

Rio explained that volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau remains highly fluctuating, with seismic levels sometimes rising sharply before falling again at other times.

“The most recent eruption recorded by instruments occurred the previous night at around 23.34 Western Indonesia Time,” he added.

To anticipate developments in magmatic activity, PVMBG continues to carry out intensive round-the-clock monitoring through the observation post, supported by various volcanic monitoring instruments in the field.

“Periodic evaluations by the team of volcanology experts serve as the main reference in determining mitigation measures,” he said.

In line with the Standby status, PVMBG affirmed that the recommended safety zone remains unchanged. Members of the public, tourists and fishermen are strictly prohibited from approaching or carrying out any activities within a three-kilometre radius of Mount Anak Krakatau’s active crater.

The public is also urged to remain calm, comply with all instructions from the authorities, and not be provoked by unverified information or rumours concerning the volcano’s activity.
