PVMBG Records 18 Eruptions at Mount Anak Krakatau Since 2 July 2026

The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre (PVMBG) has recorded at least 18 eruptions at Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait since 2 July 2026. Rio Bonik Situmorang, an officer at the PVMBG Anak Krakatau Volcano Observation Post, stated on Sunday that despite the heightened activity in recent days, the volcano’s status remains at Level III, or Alert. ‘There have been no eruptions today. However, in the preceding days starting from 2 July, a total of around 18 eruptions were recorded up until yesterday,’ he said. Rio explained that the volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau is currently highly volatile, with seismicity sometimes spiking significantly and at other times decreasing. ‘The last eruption successfully recorded by instruments occurred the previous night at around 11.34 p.m. Western Indonesian Time,’ he detailed. To anticipate developments in magma activity, PVMBG continues to conduct intensive 24-hour monitoring through the Observation Post, supported by various volcanic monitoring equipment in the field. ‘The periodic evaluation results from the volcanology expert team serve as the main reference for determining mitigation measures,’ he stated. In line with the Alert status, PVMBG emphasised that the safe zone recommendation remains unchanged. The public, tourists, and fishermen are strictly prohibited from approaching or conducting any activities within a three-kilometre radius of Mount Anak Krakatau’s active crater. The public is also urged to remain calm, comply with all directives from the authorities, and not be provoked by unverified information or rumours regarding the volcano’s activity.
