Russia launched another wave of missile and drone attacks across various regions of Ukraine on Wednesday (07/10/2026), killing at least 28 people and injuring around 100 others. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as one of the most ‘brutal’ since the war began.

The highest number of casualties was recorded in Pryluky, in the Chernihiv region of northern Ukraine, after Russian missiles destroyed a five-storey residential building. Zelensky stated that 19 people died in the town, including five children, while approximately 55 others were injured.

“This is the kind of birthday present Putin gives to himself: the killing of children, the killing of civilians,” Zelensky said in a video address on Wednesday night, as quoted by Reuters. He noted that the attack coincided with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s birthday.

Zelensky stated that Russia fired approximately 70 missiles at Ukraine overnight, many of which were high-speed ballistic missiles, accompanied by dozens of Shahed drones.

“Russia wants to launch an attack that is painful and full of a show of force. This is one of the most brutal attacks,” he said.

In Pryluky, rescue teams used heavy machinery and ladders to search for victims amidst the building rubble. The Deputy Mayor of Pryluky, Danylo Savenko, stated that damage occurred in many parts of the city. “There is significant damage, especially in the city centre,” he said.

On the other hand, the Ukrainian Air Force claimed to have successfully intercepted more than 80% of the 46 jet-powered drones launched by Russia. This success rate is significantly higher than in previous weeks, when Ukraine managed to down an average of only 50%-60% of such drones.

Nevertheless, Zelensky said that ballistic missiles remain the greatest threat. He noted that Ukraine continues to seek Patriot air defence systems, which are deemed essential for countering high-speed missiles, while the European Union has provided new funding of 1.2 billion euros, or approximately Rp24.2 trillion, for Ukraine’s defence needs.

The attacks also caused Kyiv residents to flock to metro stations after Ukrainian officials warned of a major strike.

“The metro is safer because we live on the 9th floor of an apartment building, and it feels very terrifying to be on the 9th floor when missiles are flying towards us,” said Lesia, a 49-year-old resident of Kyiv, to Reuters.
