Moscow, 10 March 2026 — Russian President Vladimir Putin has responded to the selection of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, pledging steadfast support to the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s son, who died in a US-Israeli attack on Iran on 28 February.

“I want to reaffirm our unwavering support for Tehran and solidarity with our Iranian friends,” Putin said in a message to Mojtaba, according to AFP.

“Russia has been and will remain a reliable partner for Iran,” he added.

Putin acknowledged the challenging circumstances Iran currently faces and conveyed a special message to Mojtaba. “As Iran faces armed aggression, your tenure in this high position will certainly require great courage and dedication,” he stated.

According to an official statement from the Islamic Republic of Iran’s embassy in Jakarta released on Monday, Mojtaba Khamenei was elected with more than 85 per cent of the vote from Assembly of Experts members. The election followed Articles 107 and 108 of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Constitution for an eight-year term.

With Khamenei’s successor in place, Iran’s embassy confirmed that the leadership transition remains stable. Immediately following the appointment, Iran activated strategic military measures under new command.

Iran reported significant casualties and damage from US and Israeli strikes over the past ten days. To date, more than 1,300 children and civilians have been killed. Additionally, 9,669 civilian targets have been reported destroyed, including 7,943 residential units, medical centres, schools, and energy infrastructure.
