Moscow (ANTARA) – Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that it was unjust for no African countries to be represented among the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

“The absence of African representation among the permanent members of the Security Council is unfair,” Putin said at the plenary session of the Russia-Africa Summit.

“I fully agree with you, just as I agree with our other colleagues. The world is changing, as is Africa. Africa’s role and importance are growing and, as we have said and agreed together, its role will continue to grow,” he said.

Putin said UNSC reform should be carried out without dismantling the mechanisms the organisation has in place. He added that, to date, there is no alternative to the United Nations.

The third Russia-Africa Summit and Economic and Humanitarian Forum is taking place in Moscow on 28–29 October.
