Putin and Xi Jinping discuss energy and a multipolar world in China
Tokyo (ANTARA) - Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in China on Tuesday to hold talks with President Xi Jinping on energy and a multipolar world order, just days after US President Donald Trump visited the Asian country.
According to Kyodo, citing Chinese government media, after Putin and Xi meet, China and Russia will sign several joint statements on strengthening the bilateral partnership and building a multipolar world, totaling around 40 bilateral documents.
According to a Kremlin statement, Putin is also scheduled to hold talks with Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
Xi and Putin are likely to discuss the ongoing war involving the United States and Israel against Iran and bilateral energy cooperation. Russia is a major crude oil supplier to the Asian economic powerhouse.
Before his trip to China, Putin said in a video that Russia–China relations had reached a level truly never seen before, according to Xinhua News Agency.
On Monday (18 May), Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a press conference that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership of Cooperation between China and Russia has contributed significantly to global strategic stability and to upholding international justice and equality.
“Both sides will seize this opportunity to further deepen and enhance China–Russia relations, thereby providing more stability and positive energy for the world,” Jiakun said.
Putin’s visit to China is part of commemorating the 25th anniversary of signing the “Good Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation Agreement between China and Russia”.
The last time Putin visited Beijing was in September 2025 to witness a military parade marking the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II.
China and Russia have strengthened bilateral ties in recent years, with Beijing opposing Western sanctions against Moscow following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine that began in February 2022.
