Put a stop to carnage

We deplore the clash between Mercu Buana University students
and security forces on the university campus. The clash resulted
in many injured victim. The damage to the campus discredits our
security forces, who seem to be increasingly repressive and
brutal.

We from the Mercu Buana University Lecturers' Communication
Forum deplore this physical clash that caused losses on both
sides. We are convinced that the clash could have been avoided if
the security forces had restrained themselves and translated
wisely the instruction issued by the Minister of Defense and
Security/Armed Forces Commander. We hope that, in accordance with
the Mercu Buana University students' commitment, student actions
will take place in an orderly fashion without disturbing public
activities. This was evident in their orderly actions on the
previous days.

We appeal to the security forces to learn from the bloody
tragedy at the Mercu Buana University to take a stance that
reflects a better understanding of the meaning and magnitude of
student movements, in order to prevent a repeat of the tragedy at
other campuses in Indonesia.
