JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Commission IX of the DPR will evaluate the working hours of intern doctors or internships, following the case of the death of dr Myta Aprilia Azmy, which is suspected to be due to excessive workload.

To evaluate this matter, Commission IX will summon the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), scheduled for next week.

“A comprehensive evaluation of intern doctors’ working hours to a maximum of 40 hours/week. This is in accordance with WHO standards that to maintain the health and quality of service from medical personnel, doctors’ working hours are 40-48 hours/week,” said Deputy Chairman of Commission IX of the DPR Yahya Zaini when contacted on Friday (8/5/2026).

In the field, he observed that many intern doctors are still working beyond the stipulated hours.

“It is also necessary to consider creating a digital attendance system to monitor those working hours,” said Yahya.

“Intern doctors’ right to leave without deduction if there is force majeure, such as illness or the death of an immediate family member,” said Yahya.

Local governments are also urged to provide additional incentives and social security guarantees for employment for intern doctors.

“There needs to be additional incentives from local governments, including employment social security guarantees. At minimum two guarantees, namely JKK and JKM,” said Yahya.

Those working hours were emphasised by Budi in a press conference on the results of the investigation into the case of the death of the intern doctor graduate of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sriwijaya (Unsri), Myta Aprilia Azmy, due to suspected overwork.

“That is 40 hours per week and must be 8 hours per day for 5 working days, or if 6 working days, 40 divided by 6 days is about 6 hours almost 7 hours. The important thing is that it must not exceed 40 hours,” said Budi at the Ministry of Health Office (Kemenkes), Jakarta, on Thursday (7/5/2026).

“Whether co-assistants, internships, or PPDS, there should be no more bullying, extortion, coercion. That must not happen anymore,” Budi emphasised.
