Purwakarta Regent's Song Case: Komnas Perempuan Calls for Leaders Committed to Ending Discrimination

The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) has assessed that development requires leaders who understand gender-based power relations and are committed to eliminating discrimination in governance. The statement was made in response to the controversy surrounding a song titled ‘Lalaki Langit, Lalanang Bejat’ by the Purwakarta Regent. Komnas Perempuan member Daden Sukendar stated on Tuesday (7/7/2026) that the case serves as a reminder that gender-equitable development cannot rely solely on regulations. ‘Development requires leaders who understand gender-based power relations, are able to identify the impact of policies on women and vulnerable groups, and are committed to eliminating discrimination in the administration of government,’ he said. The commission views the polemic as momentum to strengthen gender mainstreaming institutions nationally. Daden emphasised that a gender perspective needs to be systematically integrated into the recruitment, cadre formation, education, training, promotion, and performance evaluation of public officials. ‘Leadership standards cannot be measured solely by administrative and technocratic capabilities, but must also include an understanding of human rights, gender equality, the protection of women, and the principle of non-discrimination,’ he added. Komnas Perempuan also urged the government to reinforce Presidential Instruction Number 9 of 2000 by making a gender perspective one of the competency standards for all public officials. Furthermore, the commission requested that the General Elections Commission, the Elections Supervisory Body, and political parties develop briefing mechanisms for prospective public officials on gender equality, human rights, and the protection of women’s rights. ‘All public officials must make respect for women’s dignity, the principle of equality, and non-discrimination the foundation of every public statement as well as policy formulation and implementation,’ Daden Sukendar concluded.
