Purbaya's Promise: No Tax Increases or New Taxes in 2027

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has assured that the government will not implement new taxes, nor tax-rate increases, in 2027. ‘There won’t be any, not at the moment,’ he said at the DPR complex in Jakarta on Wednesday, 20 May 2026. He emphasised that although economic growth targets for 2027 are high at 5.8%-6.5%, the government still has room in state revenue collection to accelerate development. To meet that growth target, the government has designed revenue to be optimised at around 11.82%-12.40% of GDP and government expenditure 13.62%-14.8% of GDP by 2027. ‘Well, we will look at it selectively. Those are assumptions; there is no increase in taxes yet, but if the economy becomes healthy for the public, we will think about it gradually,’ Purbaya said. Purbaya noted that if Indonesia’s economic growth realization is already at a high and stable level like 6%, only then should tax policy adjustments be made, without affecting purchasing power. ‘So we will implement taxes that do not undermine purchasing power or the direction of the economy,’ he asserted.
