Purbaya to Sack Director General of Customs if Found Guilty

The Finance Minister (Menkeu) Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has stated he would dismiss Lieutenant General (Ret) Djaka Budhi Utama from his post as Director General of Customs if it is proven that he took a bribe in the Blueray Cargo case belonging to defendant John Field. The move also serves as a response to an order from the President of the Republic of Indonesia. At present, Purbaya is not involved in the trial process that implicates his subordinate. However, if the trial can prove the allegations, he would not hesitate to take firm action against the Director General of Customs as directed by the President. ‘If the trial shows, I won’t interfere. I will just see what the outcome is. If proven guilty, then yes, he should be dismissed,’ Purbaya told reporters at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs in Central Jakarta on Thursday (21 May 2026). President Prabowo Subianto previously urged Minister Purbaya to replace the leadership of the Directorate General of Customs if it is judged unable to work quickly. In the DPR RI plenary session at Nusantara Building, Parliament Complex, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (20 May 2026), Prabowo stressed that the government must eradicate corruption, abuse of power, and practices that hinder the economy. ‘Our Customs must be improved. Minister of Finance, if the leadership of Customs cannot be replaced promptly,’ Prabowo told more than 400 members of the DPR and several state officials.
