Purbaya States Prabowo Has Determined Coal Export Duty Rate
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa stated that President Prabowo Subianto has determined the rate for the Export Duty (BK) on coal. However, although Purbaya was reluctant to disclose the specific rate for the export duty, he revealed that the coal BK will take effect on 1 April 2026. “It should be, if tomorrow’s meeting goes ahead, then (effective) 1 April. If tomorrow’s meeting goes ahead. Not sure yet, as I still need to discuss it first,” he said at the Ministry of Finance in Jakarta on Wednesday (25/3/2026). “The President said just this amount, but the technical aspects need to be refined, and once refined, we will announce it,” he continued. Purbaya admitted that although some business actors disagree with the imposition of the export duty, in his view, coal prices are currently high and should be utilised. He considers that the determination of regulations on the imposition of coal export duties is not dictated by business actors. Therefore, to address this situation, the government is preparing the export duty instrument as an effort to increase state revenues while promoting coal downstreaming and decarbonisation programmes. “Currently, the mechanism is being finalised by us, together with relevant ministries,” Purbaya said during a Working Meeting with Commission XI of the DPR RI on Monday (8/12/2025).
