Purbaya Signals Customs and Excise Directorate Will Not Be Dissolved

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has signalled that the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) will be retained. This means the plan to dissolve the Directorate General of Customs and Excise and replace it with Switzerland’s Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) will not proceed.

According to Purbaya, this is because President Prabowo Subianto has observed significant improvements in the performance of Customs and Excise. Nevertheless, Prabowo still requested that the Directorate General of Customs and Excise continue to enhance its performance.

“Mr Prabowo has seen significant improvements at Customs and Excise. Previously, he said to dissolve it; now, he mentioned in one of the cabinet meetings that Customs and Excise can be fixed and must be fixed. That is a clear signal that there are positive developments at Customs and Excise acknowledged by our leader, so it is likely that Customs and Excise will survive,” Purbaya stated during the APBN KITA press conference on Tuesday (21/7/2026).

Purbaya said the performance improvements at Customs and Excise occurred following a reshuffle in the leadership ranks. According to him, the top leadership of Customs and Excise is now filled by good people.

These improvements, Purbaya said, have driven an increase in Customs and Excise revenue of around 7 per cent. Additionally, he claimed that the circulation of smuggled goods in the market has begun to decrease.

“Furthermore, Customs and Excise is actively conducting seizures of illegal cigarettes; there are a great many now,” Purbaya remarked.
