Purbaya Sets Conditions for New Tax Imposition Next Year
Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has stated that the possibility of imposing new taxes in the 2027 fiscal year remains open if national economic growth reaches 6% in consecutive periods.
Speaking at a press conference on the 2027 State Budget Draft (RAPBN) and Financial Note in Jakarta on Friday (14/8), Purbaya explained that he would monitor economic performance over the coming quarters. Should the economy grow by 6% by the end of 2026 and again in the first quarter of 2027, he would then consider the possibility of levying new taxes.
“If it is only one quarter, it is not yet possible. But the room for that becomes wide open. We will see how the public’s purchasing power actually is. For example, if by the end of this year it can reach 6%, then the first quarter of 2027 can reach 6% again, or more, perhaps we will impose new taxes,” Purbaya explained.
He said the strategy was prepared to pursue the tax revenue target for next year. In the 2027 RAPBN, the government is targeting tax revenue of Rp2,591.4 trillion, growing 12.1% from the 2026 State Budget projection of Rp2,310.8 trillion.
Tax revenue is one of the government’s targets for increasing state income, which is set at Rp3,426 trillion, or growing 6.8% from the 2026 State Budget projection of Rp3,208.1 trillion.
In the Finance Minister’s presentation, efforts to increase revenue next year will be carried out gradually and sustainably to encourage high economic growth.
Three strategies will be implemented to boost state revenue. First, optimising state revenue through strengthening taxation and natural resource receipts.
Second, strengthening the legal approach and fiscal incentives to support investment. Third, adjusting state revenue policy to the digital economy and global taxation.
