Indonesian Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has successfully secured a funding commitment worth US$17 billion from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to support various national development projects during the 2025-2029 period. The commitment was one of the main achievements of a bilateral meeting between the minister and AIIB leadership in Beijing, China, on Wednesday (17/6) local time. The funding support from AIIB is expected to strengthen national development financing capacity and accelerate the implementation of various strategic government projects. “The most important thing is that we managed to secure funding of around 17 billion US dollars for development projects in Indonesia between 2025 and 2029. This is a very large contribution to financing development projects in Indonesia,” Purbaya said in a statement quoted on Thursday (18/6). The minister explained that the funding is part of a Multi-Year Rolling Pipeline that has been discussed with AIIB. Although some programmes had been designed previously, the Indonesian government succeeded in ensuring the continuity of the funding commitment from the multilateral institution to support the national development agenda in the coming years. In addition to financing support, Indonesia also received a positive signal regarding AIIB’s expansion plans in the country. Purbaya said AIIB expressed interest in opening a representative office in Jakarta. This is intended to strengthen cooperation and improve the effectiveness of coordination for the implementation of AIIB-supported projects, thereby further solidifying the strategic partnership between Indonesia and the bank. “AIIB is also interested in establishing a sort of branch office in Jakarta. We certainly welcome this intention and I hope the office will be up and running by June next year,” the minister said. On the same occasion, the minister emphasised that AIIB maintains a high level of confidence in Indonesia’s fiscal condition. According to him, there were no concerns from AIIB regarding the nation’s fiscal management or future economic prospects. “They have no issues with Indonesia’s fiscal position. They are confident in our fiscal credibility and creativity,” he concluded. The meeting with AIIB was part of the minister’s working agenda in Beijing, which also included meetings with global investors and Chinese financial authorities. Amid ongoing global economic dynamics, the Ministry of Finance views the outcomes of the meeting as a positive signal that international financial institutions continue to place strong trust in Indonesia’s economic prospects and the government’s fiscal policy sustainability.
