Purbaya Says Rupiah Remains Under BI Control After Breaching Rp18,000/US$
Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has said that the rupiah’s movement is still under the control of Bank Indonesia (BI), even as the exchange rate settled above the Rp18,000 per US dollar level. The currency breached this psychological threshold on Thursday morning.
“Everything remains under their control. I leave the Rupiah to them,” Purbaya stated at the Parliament complex in Jakarta on Thursday (4/6/2026).
Purbaya confirmed that the government has no immediate plans to convene an unscheduled meeting of the Financial System Stability Committee (KSSK) outside its regular schedule to address the mounting pressure on the exchange rate against the US dollar. “You will see me panic then. So no [unscheduled KSSK meeting], basically BI is still executing its policies well,” he asserted.
Bank Indonesia had earlier issued a statement responding to the rupiah’s continued weakening trend. Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti explained that the depreciation was still influenced by re-escalated geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which are hindering peace prospects and keeping oil prices high, thereby elevating global inflation risks and prompting capital outflows from emerging markets.
She added that sizeable domestic demand was also a factor, in line with patterns of dividend repatriation and external debt payments.
According to BI, exchange rate pressure is being experienced by many countries. The Malaysian ringgit weakened 0.55% to MYR 4.012 per US dollar, the Vietnamese dong fell 0.17% to VND 26,335 per US dollar, the Taiwanese dollar declined 0.14% to TWD 31.5 per US dollar, and the Chinese yuan depreciated to CNY 6.775 per US dollar, a correction of 0.09%.
“Generally, the rupiah’s weakening remains in line with the regional trend, depreciating by -7.44% year to date,” she said.
