Purbaya Responds to Complaints from Tofu and Tempeh Traders Affected by Rupiah Weakening
Jakarta, VIVA – Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has responded to complaints from tofu and tempeh traders and producers regarding the weakening of the rupiah, which has impacted their incomes. He acknowledged that these traders have been forced to raise product prices due to a surge in production costs resulting from the importation of soybeans as a primary raw material.
“Tofu and tempeh sellers have seen their profits eroded or have been forced to increase prices because their raw materials are imported, which raises their production costs,” Purbaya stated at the DPR RI in Senayan, Jakarta, on Saturday, 6 June 2026.
Consequently, he ensured that fiscal and monetary authorities are preparing various measures to stabilise the rupiah exchange rate through policy synchronisation efforts. The goal is to return the rupiah to a stable state and ensure that economic growth remains steady at both macro and micro levels.
“With better policies, we will eventually see a more stable rupiah, so that tofu and tempeh traders, as well as households, can benefit from better prices,” he said.
He reaffirmed that the national economic fundamentals remain very strong. Therefore, Bank Indonesia (BI) and the Ministry of Finance will continue to strive to tighten monetary and fiscal policies to ensure they are aligned and impactful on economic growth and the rupiah exchange rate.
“We will support the Central Bank in strengthening coordination to ensure policies become more synchronised, so that the impact of monetary and fiscal policies on the economy is more significant,” said Purbaya. “And certainly, once policies are unified through full synergy, it should restore market confidence in the rupiah, leading to a significant strengthening of the currency.”
