Purbaya Pushes for Transition to Environmentally Friendly Vehicles

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa met with the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (GAIKINDO) to discuss strengthening the domestic automotive market and accelerating the transition to electric (EV) and hybrid vehicles in Indonesia. In the meeting held on Thursday, 9 April 2026, Purbaya highlighted the positive trends in the performance of the national automotive market. “The government is committed to providing support so that the domestic automotive industry becomes increasingly competitive globally, while also encouraging the transition to cleaner vehicles,” he said in an official statement on Friday, 10 April 2026. According to GAIKINDO data, car sales in the first quarter of 2026 increased compared to the same period last year. This growth, according to them, was strongly driven by the significant surge in electric vehicle adoption among the public. EV car sales have increased year-on-year. GAIKINDO recorded 10,327 electric cars sold in 2022, 17,051 units in 2023, rising to 43,188 units in 2024, and breaking through 103,931 units in 2025. In addition, Purbaya emphasised that the government is committed to promoting the transition to cleaner vehicles. Through synergy between government regulations and the readiness of industry players under the auspices of GAIKINDO, Indonesia is expected to be able to become a major player in the global electric vehicle supply chain while suppressing carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
