Purbaya Leak: State Budget Deficit Around 0.7% of GDP in May 2026
Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa stated that his ministry will announce the performance of the State Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBN) up to May 2026 during the APBN KiTa press conference today, Friday (5/6/2026). According to the invitation distributed by the Ministry of Finance, the APBN KiTa press conference will be held this afternoon at 1:30 PM WIB at the Ministry of Finance office in Central Jakarta. Purbaya emphasised that state finances have shown positive performance thus far, despite exchange rate turbulence. He also refuted the notion that the fiscal deficit is triggering the weakening of the rupiah exchange rate. “The fiscal [position] is good. There will be the APBN KiTa press conference tomorrow. You can ask again there, I will explain further. Otherwise, I will be repeating myself here, but fundamentally it is secure,” Purbaya told reporters at the House of Representatives (DPR RI) on Thursday (4/6/2026). According to Purbaya, the APBN deficit as of May stood at around 0.7% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), higher than the April position of 0.64%. He assessed that this figure remains well below the government’s established state budget deficit limit. He continued that if the deficit were calculated for a full year, the APBN deficit ratio is estimated to be in the range of 1.8% of GDP. This deficit amount is still below the 3% of GDP threshold stipulated by law. “In May, the deficit increased slightly compared to April, to 0.7%. But that is over five months, whereas April’s figure was over four months. If we calculate it as 12-fifths times 0.7, the rough estimate for the annual deficit ratio is around 1.8% of GDP. So, by this rough calculation, it is safe,” he explained.
