Purbaya Denies Public is Massively Depleting Savings
Finance Minister Purbability Yudhi Sadewa has denied the assumption that the Indonesian public is generally facing such financial difficulties that they must drain their savings. This is because the growth of third-party funds (DPK) in the banking sector has still reached approximately 12 per cent.
“If we look at DPK, it is growing in double digits, isn’t it, Mr Herman? It is in double digits now. DPK is at 12 per cent,” said Purbaya while speaking to journalists in Jakarta on Tuesday (8/9/2026).
According to Purbaya, the growth of DPK indicates that public deposits in the banking sector are still increasing. However, he acknowledged that economic growth is not felt by all segments of society.
“It is like this: even if the economy grows rapidly, there will certainly be segments of the population that have not yet felt the impact,” he said.
This condition, Purbaya noted, can be particularly felt during periods of economic volatility when the lower layers of society struggle to access money. “During such volatility, at the lower levels, there will certainly be conditions where it is not easy to find money,” he added.
Consequently, the government is striving to encourage faster economic growth. Purbaya mentioned that the government had injected more money into the economic system during July and early August.
He expressed hope that more people would feel the benefits of economic growth. “I hope that [the hardship] will further decrease. However, if there are general shortages, there certainly will be,” Purbaya remarked.
Purbaya also linked the condition of scarcity to the economic concept of scarcity. He noted that the public will always be faced with choices, but the government is working to ensure those choices do not leave the public in a state of extreme desperation.
“We will choose which is good and which is bad; that will certainly exist. But the important thing is that the choices do not become too desperate. Such as, if we don’t choose this, we die, or if we choose this, [we suffer],” said Purbaya.
