Purbaya Confirms Customs Role Unchanged Despite New DSI Entity
JAKARTA - Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa confirmed that the role of the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) will continue as usual despite the government establishing a new export entity, PT Danantara Sumberdaya Indonesia (DSI). Purbaya stated there are no plans to transfer part of the natural resources export supervision functions to DSI. “The role of Customs remains the same. What’s the difference? DSI will handle reporting and trading, but Customs will still inspect imports and exports. So the function of Customs is not lost,” Purbaya said at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs in Jakarta on Tuesday, 26 May 2026. “There have been claims to that effect, but I have not received any instructions from the President regarding this, and it appears he has not discussed it moving forward. In fact, he stated that we should strengthen Customs,” he added. However, Purbaya noted that President Prabowo had previously indicated a strict evaluation of Customs’ performance. He said improvements would still be made, including replacing leadership if they are deemed incapable of performing their duties properly. “The role of Customs remains the same with DSI’s establishment, but it will be improved as per the President’s speech. If they are not competent, their heads will be removed,” Purbaya said. He added that technology-based monitoring can enhance transparency and minimise revenue leakage.
