Purbaya Claims to Have Dispelled World Bank's Doubts on Cooperation with Indonesia
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa stated that he has dispelled doubts from the World Bank regarding Indonesia’s economy.
“So the doubts about whether we can implement good fiscal policies, and we have created good meetings, at the same time it seems (those doubts) have disappeared,” said Purbaya in a statement from the Government Communication Agency (Bakom), on Thursday (16/4/2026).
Purbaya conveyed this after meeting with the IMF, World Bank, international rating agencies, and 18 global investment institutions in Washington, DC, United States, on Wednesday (15/4/2026).
Regarding the meeting with global investors, including Goldman Sachs and Fidelity, Purbaya said that initially they questioned Indonesia’s commitment to economic growth and the impact of the state budget.
Purbaya then responded by explaining the direction of economic policy in detail and comprehensively, which was positively received by the investors.
“So they really liked our explanation that we will create faster economic growth without sacrificing fiscal policy,” said Purbaya.
“So it should not be long before (capital flows) will enter Indonesia and will push the Indonesian capital market to a higher level,” he explained.
Furthermore, regarding the meeting with the IMF, Purbaya said that he met directly with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.
He claimed that Kristalina conveyed that global uncertainty would remain high for some time to come.
However, said Purbaya, the IMF is interested in Indonesia’s condition which still has strong economic fundamentals amid global turmoil.
Purbaya explained that this is inseparable from the policy adjustments made by Indonesia since last year, thus able to mitigate the impact of external shocks, especially the rise in world oil prices.
“And she (Kristalina) seems pleased with that situation. Clearly, they (IMF) will inform the whole world which countries are performing well,” said Purbaya.
According to him, the World Bank will explore opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation with Indonesia.
“So the doubts about whether we can implement good fiscal policies, and we have created good meetings, at the same time it seems (those doubts) have disappeared,” he added.
