Jakarta, CNN Indonesia – KGPH Purbaya has changed his name on his national identity card (KTP) to Sri Susuhunan Pakubuwono Empat Belas (the Fourteenth). The name change follows Solo District Court ruling number 178/Pdt.P/2025/PN Skt. After the court granted the request, he processed his civil registration documents and had a new photo taken for his new ID card at the Solo Population and Civil Registration Agency on Thursday (2/12).

On the other hand, the Traditional Council (LDA) is furious over Purbaya’s name change on his ID card to Pakubuwono XIV. As reported by detikJateng, the LDA has sued Purbaya and GKR Paku Buwono XIII, and filed a cassation appeal against the court ruling to the Supreme Court.

Additionally, the LDA is considering suing the Solo City Government. Below is a summary of the controversy surrounding PB XIV Purbaya’s new identity.

KGPH Purbaya, or Paku Buwono (PB) XIV Purbaya, has officially changed his name to Sri Susuhunan Pakubuwono Empat Belas on his ID card. The name change was processed at the Solo City Population and Civil Registration Agency on Thursday (2/12). He said the name change complies with Solo District Court ruling number 178/Pdt.P/2025/PN Skt, changing from KGPH Purbaya to Pakubuwono Empat Belas.

“Yes, this follows the regulations,” Purbaya told reporters at the Solo Population and Civil Registration Agency on Thursday, as quoted by detikJateng.

Meanwhile, Solo Population and Civil Registration Agency Head Agung Hendratno said Purbaya’s name change was based on Article 7 paragraph (1) of Law Number 30 of 2014, which stipulates that government officials are obligated to comply with legally binding district court rulings. Additionally, he said, it follows Article 4 paragraph (3) of Home Affairs Minister Regulation Number 73 of 2022 on Name Recording in Civil Registration Documents.

“Based on those regulations, the agency essentially carried out Solo District Court ruling 178/Pdt.P/2025/PN Skt dated January 21, 2026. So the ID card printing was carried out today,” Agung said.

Agung explained that Roman numerals are not used on ID cards. The name is written as Sri Susuhunan Pakubuwono Empat Belas. “Yes (it reads Sri Susuhunan Pakubuwono Empat Belas), as stated in the court ruling,” he said.

Previously, Solo District Court Spokesperson Aris Gunawan said case number 178/Pdt.P/2025/PN Skt was decided on Wednesday (1/21/2026). The panel of judges issued a five-point ruling.

“One, granting the petitioner’s request in part. Two, granting permission to the petitioner to change the name originally written on the ID card as Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Harya Purbaya to Sri Susuhunan Pakubuwono Empat Belas,” Aris said on Thursday (1/29).

“Three, ordering the Surakarta City Population and Civil Registration Agency to process the petitioner’s civil registration data in accordance with this ruling, by issuing a new ID card with the name Sri Susuhunan Pakubuwono Empat Belas,” he added.

The Solo Palace Traditional Council (LDA) did not sit idly by in response to Purbaya’s name change to Paku Buwono XIV on his ID card. LDA Chairwoman GRAy Koes Moertiyah filed a lawsuit challenging the ruling that established the name change of Paku Buwono XIV Purbaya at the Solo District Court. The lawsuit was filed after the Solo District Court granted the name change from KGPH Purbaya to Sri Susuhunan Pakubuwono XIV.

LDA Executive Chairman KPH Eddy Wirabhumi said the lawsuit was registered on Wednesday (1/28) at the Solo District Court.

The LDA is also considering filing a lawsuit with the State Administrative Court (PTUN) regarding the name change. “We will evaluate whether a PTUN lawsuit is necessary. We are even confident that other reports or lawsuits will emerge related to the misuse of this ID card,” said LDA Executive Chairman KPH Eddy Wirabhumi on Friday (2/13).

Eddy said the LDA immediately sent a letter of objection to the Population and Civil Registration Agency. “Yesterday we actually sent another letter to the agency in response to their letter that we received yesterday afternoon. Because the misuse of this identity is almost certain to occur,” Eddy said.

He explained that the objection letter was in response to the agency’s decision to proceed with processing PB XIV Purbaya’s name change and issuing his new ID card based on Solo District Court Ruling Number 178/Pdt.P/2025/PN Skt.

“In that letter, the agency essentially insists on providing the service because there is a court ruling. They refuse to understand that we are challenging that court ruling and the process is ongoing,” he said.

Eddy argued that the court’s ruling is merely administrative and has no connection to palace positions or titles. “The ruling is only administrative and has no connection to palace positions or titles, but it will certainly be misused,” he stressed.

In response to the LDA’s plans to sue, Solo Population and Civil Registration Agency Head Agung Hendratno said he would wait first to see if the lawsuit is actually filed in court. “It hasn’t been filed yet. Let’s wait and see how things develop,” he said on Friday.

He also said his office had already responded to the objection letter from the traditional council. If the LDA remains unsatisfied and pursues other legal avenues, his office respects that. “The LDA’s objection letter — the agency has already responded to it. The agency respects the LDA’s efforts and takes note of the objection,” Agung said on Friday.

He emphasized that the agency is simply carrying out its duties in accordance with the Solo District Court ruling. “Nevertheless, the agency’s duty is only to carry out civil registration recording based on the court ruling regarding the name change process,” he said.
