Purbaya Boasts of Assisting Inpex to Resolve Obstacles in Masela
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa claims that the Debottlenecking Task Force (Satgas P2SP) has assisted with issues faced by several foreign investors, including the management of Inpex Masela Ltd, the Abadi Gas Field project in the Masela Block in the Arafura Sea. He revealed this at the International Seminar on Debottlenecking, held at the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday (12/5/2026).
“When the Japanese company Inpex faced problems and approached us… we formed a special task force to provide one-stop service for them. They can come to that task force and complain about anything,” Purbaya stated.
With this assistance, Purbaya explained that the special task unit for Inpex, under the Satgas P2SP, will help resolve the issues faced by the company.
Purbaya emphasised that the current government wants to accommodate various complaints related to business obstacles and to openly resolve those problems.
“That’s why we built the (Satgas P2SP) website so that you can submit complaints to us from anywhere, whether you’re a Swiss businessman or from any other country,” he said.
He also urged entrepreneurs not to fear investing in Indonesia.
As is known, Purbaya has held debottlenecking hearings eight times since last year. The meeting related to Inpex was conducted by Satgas P2SP in February. At that time, Inpex was brought together with the Ministry of Environment (KLH) and the Special Task Force for the Implementation of Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas) on Tuesday (24/2/2026).
This meeting discussed the acceleration of the Abadi Gas Field project in the Masela Block in the Arafura Sea, Maluku, operated by Inpex Masela Ltd. Purbaya, who is also the Chairman of the Debottlenecking Task Force, stressed that the jumbo gas project worth nearly US$21 billion or about Rp352 trillion must not face further delays after years of slow progress.
Purbaya acknowledged that the Masela project has been running for quite some time and was previously hindered by various permits. However, recent progress shows advancement, with the approval of the Environmental Impact Analysis (AMDAL) issued by the Ministry of Environment and the AMDAL document handed over by KLH to Inpex on Friday, 20 February 2026.
Purbaya also reaffirmed the Indonesian Government’s commitment to respecting Inpex’s upstream oil and gas contract for managing the Abadi Gas Field in the Masela Block.
“I want to emphasise that Indonesia never changes regulations and contracts that have been signed. We always respect our contracts or obligations,” Purbaya stated to Inpex representatives during the Coordinating Meeting for the National Strategic Project Onshore LNG Abadi Masela, which he chaired at the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday (24/2/2026).
Nevertheless, Purbaya explained that the government can still issue new regulations of a general nature for national policy interests. In some cases, those rules may indirectly impact ongoing projects.
“However, at some point, we might create some rules or regulations that oversee. That does not intentionally affect the contract, but due to interconnected impacts, it might affect your contract,” Purbaya said.
