Pupuk Kaltim Commits to Promoting Sustainability, Here is the Proof

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur (Pupuk Kaltim), as a member of Holding Pupuk Indonesia, continues to achieve positive milestones in promoting sustainability by receiving the 2025 PROPER Gold award for Company Performance Rating Programme in Environmental Management from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry/Environmental Control Agency (KLHK/BPLH). This award marks the ninth consecutive time Pupuk Kaltim has received the highest government recognition given to businesses for supporting environmental management and community welfare. This result demonstrates the seriousness of Pupuk Indonesia as a holding company that remains committed to encouraging its subsidiaries to maintain environmental management. The award was presented directly by the Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, to the President Director of Pupuk Kaltim, Gusrizal, at the awarding ceremony in Sasono Langen Budoyo, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 7 April 2026. Gusrizal stated that this achievement shows Pupuk Kaltim’s commitment to implementing the beyond compliance principle, not only focusing on regulatory compliance but also promoting innovations that directly impact the environment and society. “This achievement reflects Pupuk Kaltim’s commitment to going beyond regulatory compliance by introducing various innovations that provide tangible benefits to the environment and society,” said Gusrizal, quoted on Friday (24/4/2026). This success is supported by various flagship innovations implemented by the company throughout 2025, in aspects of social innovation, eco-innovation, and the application of carbon economics to support company sustainability. Pupuk Kaltim consistently integrates sustainability principles into all lines of business, including through strengthening operational efficiency and developing environmentally friendly products. In the social innovation aspect, Pupuk Kaltim has introduced the PKT BISA (Integrated Area Development Programme Based on Agroenergy System Integration) programme, which promotes the utilisation of agricultural and livestock waste into alternative biogas energy, while supporting increased agricultural productivity for the community. This programme integrates agriculture, livestock, and renewable energy sectors in one integrated area. In addition, the company also runs the TAMASYA (Child Care Loving Garden) programme as a form of contribution to community empowerment, particularly in improving child care quality and family welfare in areas around operational sites. On the environmental side, Pupuk Kaltim strengthens eco-innovation through the Road to Zero Waste concept, which encourages independent and sustainable waste management. This initiative is part of the company’s efforts to reduce reliance on final disposal sites while creating added value from waste. Through this eco-innovation, waste is viewed as a valuable resource, and with proper management, it will provide benefits not only to the company but also to the surrounding community. Sustainability commitment is also realised through the implementation of Carbon Economic Value (NEK), including the construction of Solar Power Plants (PLTS). To date, Pupuk Kaltim has realised the construction of PLTS phase 1 in 2022 with a capacity of 1.2 Megawatts (MW) and phase 2 in 2024 with a capacity of 2.6 MW. Looking ahead, Pupuk Kaltim plans to build a PLTS with a capacity of 2.3 MW in 2026, as well as collaboration plans for CO2 utilisation. The implementation of Carbon Economic Value is a strategic step for Pupuk Kaltim in supporting emission reduction targets and strengthening commitment towards a low-carbon company. On the operational side, Pupuk Kaltim also continues to strengthen efficiency and performance excellence through various initiatives, including the Revamping of Ammonia Plant-2, as well as downstream and product diversification initiatives such as the development of a soda ash plant. “Looking ahead, Pupuk Kaltim will continue to strengthen the implementation of sustainability programmes through social innovation, eco-innovation, and the development of renewable energy to support sustainable development in Indonesia,” Gusrizal concluded. PROPER Gold is the highest category of the award and is given to companies that demonstrate superior environmental performance, compliance with regulations, and significant application of sustainability principles and community empowerment.
