Jakarta (ANTARA) – PT Pupuk Indonesia has pledged to support the development of decarbonisation technology as part of the transformation towards a more sustainable fertiliser industry.

Pupuk Indonesia President Director Rahmad Pribadi expressed his appreciation to the Ministry of Industry for its support and guidance in developing Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) technology.

“We are committed to continuing to support decarbonisation efforts as directed and instructed by the Ministry of Industry,” he said in a statement in Jakarta on Saturday.

According to Rahmad, the results of the pilot project at Petrokimia Gresik have demonstrated proof of concept, opening the way for the technology to be developed on a commercial scale.

Any move towards commercial-scale deployment, he said, would take into account the results of technology evaluations and economic feasibility, to ensure the application delivers optimal benefits to industry.

Previously, Minister of Industry Muhammad Sarmuji said PT Petrokimia Gresik (Persero), an agro-industry solutions company and member of the PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) holding, had the potential to make history as a pioneer in applying CCU technology in Indonesia.

The project is a collaboration between the Ministry of Industry, Pupuk Indonesia, Petrokimia Gresik and UWin Resources Regeneration Inc. It forms part of efforts to develop emissions-reduction technology while creating opportunities to increase economic value by utilising carbon produced by industrial processes.

“The CCU pilot project at Petrokimia Gresik is an important step in developing the national green industry,” he said while reviewing the project’s progress in Gresik, East Java, on Friday (16 October).

He said the technology’s development was expected to create opportunities for wider application in other industrial sectors.

“This will make history for Petrokimia Gresik as an industry pioneer in applying Carbon Capture and Utilisation. We will promote it more widely because this pilot project delivers significant benefits,” Sarmuji said.

Petrokimia Gresik President Director Daconi Khotob said the company’s involvement in the CCU pilot project was in line with the sustainability initiatives it had already undertaken.

He said environmentally friendly industrial development needed to be supported by innovation and continuous improvements in efficiency.

“Petrokimia Gresik is committed to applying sustainability principles in its operations through efficiency, innovation and environmental management,” he said, adding that this commitment was reflected in the company hosting the CCU pilot project with the Ministry of Industry and UWin.

“We hope this collaboration will also help foster a more environmentally friendly and competitive national industry,” Daconi said.

As a practical demonstration of this commitment, Petrokimia Gresik has a decarbonisation roadmap to support Indonesia’s Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (ENDC) target for 2030 and its net-zero emissions (NZE) goal for 2060.

By 2025, the company had recorded greenhouse gas emissions reductions of nearly 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) through various decarbonisation programmes.
