Pupils give food to orphanages

JAKARTA (JP): Little Apple Pre-school in Kelapa Gading has been collecting donations of rice, sugar, instant noodles, cooking oil and syrup from pupils' parents to give to hungry orphans.

"The response from parents has been so great that each pupil has given between 25 and 50 kilograms of rice along with other items like syrup, sugar and cooking oil," Meraj Saeed, the school's principal, said on Thursday.

"We as human beings are obliged to help those who are suffering before us. Let's teach the children in our schools what giving and helping is all about," she said.

The international school, which has 60 pupils of various nationalities, mainly Asian, was scheduled to hand over the donations to two orphanages -- Putra Setia in Central Jakarta and Nurul Falah in North Jakarta -- on Friday, Meraj said. (hhr)
