Punishment for drug traffickers

Early in 2001 the Directorate General of Taxation and Excise
succeeded in catching some foreigners who evidently brought
significantly large amounts of heroin into Indonesia.

Drug abuse in Indonesia is an old problem which is destroying
our younger generations. The rise of crime in the country is
primarily caused by the economic crisis, and secondarily by drug
abuse and alcoholism. Drug abuse has claimed a lot of victims,
but the government has not been serious in tackling this matter.

The punishments imposed on drug traffickers only take the form
of political promises. The upholders of the law threaten to
impose heavy punishments on drug traffickers, but the reality is,
I believe, still very far from expectations.

For this purpose, let us together combat drug abuse. I expect
the law to impose heavy punishments, if necessary capital
punishment, on drug traffickers, who have unquestionably
destroyed our younger generations.
