Pulp plant in Toba Samosir

We can understand Toba Samosir's regent's enthusiasm when the
plan for PT Toba Pulp Lestari (PT TPL) to establish a pulp plant
was announced in the mass media. This venture might be a source
of concern for the Toba Samosir people and those living outside
the region.

There are several reasons why it is not judicious to establish
a pulp plant in the Toba Samosir regency.

First, PT TPL may not have enough raw material for its pulp
production as the locals will not allow the company to cut the
trees here as the trees are being conserved for the sake of the
environment.

Second, the Toba Samosir regent, Dr. Sahala Tampubolon, was
definitely unwise in approving the construction of the pulp plant
as the locals are still traumatized by the operations of the
previous pulp plant.
