Public Works Ministry Upgrades Krayan Ring Road to Boost Accessibility

The Ministry of Public Works, through the Directorate General of Highways, is strengthening border region connectivity by upgrading the Krayan Ring Road in North Kalimantan Province. Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo stated that this step represents the government’s commitment to maintaining the stability of the road network to support regional connectivity and local economic growth. “The Ministry of Public Works ensures that the work is carried out in a gradual, planned, and sustainable manner so that the roads remain fit for function,” Dody said in Jakarta on Tuesday. This effort is part of the government’s commitment to improving accessibility and driving economic growth in Indonesia’s frontier regions. The Krayan Ring Road segment, which forms part of the National Road network funded by the state budget, includes the Binuang–Long Bawan section. For the 2026 fiscal year, the Ministry of Public Works has allocated a routine road and bridge maintenance programme to keep the infrastructure functional. Routine maintenance is being carried out on two main sections: the Semamu–Binuang segment spanning 40.40 km with a budget of IDR 2.0 billion, and the Binuang–Long Bawan segment spanning 43.5 km with a budget of IDR 2.2 billion. This activity aims to ensure the roads remain in a fit condition to support community mobility and logistics distribution in the border area. Furthermore, the Ministry of Public Works is following up on the results of a hearing with the North Kalimantan Provincial Legislative Council held on 23 July 2026. The meeting resulted in an agreement to optimise work on the Lembudud–Long Layu segment through the 2026 Presidential Instruction for Regional Roads programme. The optimisation involves adjusting the road width design from 6 metres to 4.5 metres to increase the effectiveness of the road length treatment. The initial 2026 Regional Roads Instruction proposal of 2 km has been increased to 3.3 km. Meanwhile, the road preservation package under the 2025–2026 Multi Years Contract scheme has also seen an increase in treatment length from 3.8 km to 4.3 km. The Ministry of Public Works emphasised that this optimisation strategy is designed to maximise budget benefits while expanding the coverage of road infrastructure services for the community, particularly in remote and border areas. Separately, road segments under the authority of the North Kalimantan Provincial Government include sections such as Long Bawan–Lembudud, Lembudud–Long Layu, and Long Rungan–Long Padi. Synergy between the central and regional governments is key to ensuring that connectivity in the Krayan area can be developed comprehensively. The Ministry of Public Works will continue to coordinate with local governments to accelerate road infrastructure development in border regions, as part of efforts to deliver equitable development and strengthen state sovereignty in the outermost areas.
