Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) is building 375 sanitation infrastructure units in North Sumatra, involving local workers.

Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo said the development of Community-Based Infrastructure (IBM) is one of the Ministry’s priorities because its benefits can be felt directly by the public, both through the provision of basic facilities and the economic impact of local labour involvement.

“We are giving special attention to Community-Based Infrastructure. IBM is very important because its impact is the closest and most directly utilised by the community, both physically and economically,” Dody said in Jakarta on Monday.

The Ministry of Public Works is strengthening public access to proper sanitation in North Sumatra through the 2026 Community-Based Infrastructure (IBM) Sanitation Programme.

A total of 375 sanitation infrastructure units are being built across several regencies and cities, while also opening employment opportunities for local residents through labour-intensive implementation, he said.

The 2026 IBM Sanitation Programme in North Sumatra covers Community-Based Sanitation (Sanimas) and Sanitation for Religious Educational Institutions (LPK).

The construction is spread across Deli Serdang Regency, Serdang Bedagai Regency, Medan City, Tebing Tinggi City, Simalungun Regency, and Padang Lawas Regency.

In Deli Serdang Regency, 207 Sanimas units and 1 LPK Sanitation unit are being built. Meanwhile, in Serdang Bedagai Regency, 161 Sanimas units and 2 LPK Sanitation units are being constructed. Other construction includes 1 LPK Sanitation unit each in Medan City, Tebing Tinggi City, Simalungun Regency, and Padang Lawas Regency.

The Sanimas facilities being built include bathroom cubicles, grease traps, septic tanks, and infiltration wells. The LPK Sanitation facilities include bathroom and toilet cubicles, handwashing stations, ablution areas, laundry areas, and wastewater treatment buildings.
