Public Works Ministry Allocates Rp1.1 Trillion for Padang Disaster Recovery
The Ministry of Public Works has disbursed Rp1.1 trillion for the restoration of infrastructure damaged by flash floods and landslides that struck Padang, West Sumatra, at the end of November 2025. The initial phase of work will focus on rehabilitating the Koto Tuo and Gunung Nago irrigation dams, as well as addressing critical flood control points. Technical works include the construction of retaining walls, slope reinforcement, and check dams to manage sediment along the Batang Kuranji and Air Dingin rivers. The ministry, through the Sumatra V River Basin Agency, is targeting the completion of rehabilitation and reconstruction within three years. Padang Mayor Fadly Amran stated that post-disaster recovery is being carried out comprehensively, encompassing land acquisition, river normalisation, sedimentation control, and the construction of flood control infrastructure, alongside strengthening spatial planning as a long-term mitigation measure to reduce future disaster risks. He added that the option of relocating residents is being prepared if it proves to be the best solution for safeguarding those in high-risk areas.
