Public transport in Jakarta increasingly popular
The Jakarta Regional-Owned Enterprises Development Agency (BP BUMD) DKI Jakarta has recorded increasing popularity of public transport services in the capital. This trend is reflected in the higher number of passengers in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. The number of public transport passengers in Jakarta, comprising Transjakarta, LRT Jakarta, and MRT Jakarta, reached 112.1 million people in the first quarter of 2026, an increase from 103.8 million in the first quarter of 2025. “This figure represents a significant increase of 7.99 percent compared to the first quarter of 2025,” said Head of BP BUMD DKI Jakarta Syaefuloh Hidayat at City Hall, Jakarta, on Friday. The rise in passenger numbers during this period, he explained, is supported in part by the expansion of Transjabodetabek services through the addition of two new routes: Cikarang-Cawang and Soekarno-Hatta Airport-Blok M, as well as the operation of two new open-top tourist bus routes (Open Top Tour), namely Jakarta Batavia and Jakarta Sea Side. Syaefuloh also reported that the number of passengers from 15 specific groups totalled 4,635,105 people up to the first quarter of 2026. Furthermore, regarding the development of the MRT Jakarta North-South Line Phase 2A construction, as of 25 March 2026, it has reached 59.19 percent. Meanwhile, the construction progress of LRT Jakarta Phase 1B route from Velodrome to Manggarai as of 25 March 2026 has reached 91.75 percent.
