Public transport destroyed in Jambi

JAMBI: Residents of Jambi ran amok and destroyed eight public transportation vehicles on Tuesday.

The residents were disappointed passengers who had been left stranded due to a transport strike. Destruction of six vehicles took place around the Angso Duo market, Jambi's main shopping area.

Antara reported on Wednesday that the strike was launched in a protest against traffic police charged with being unfair in issuing violation tickets.

On Tuesday drivers plying the Kota Jambi-Telanaipura route staged a protest at the local council demanding they should be free to pass the Angso Duo market.

Grocery traders then became angry because they were told to move by the Jambi traffic authorities to meet the drivers' demands.

"We must also earn a living by selling vegetables here," Inang, a trader said. The Armed Forces and police officers helped to transport passengers by buses owned by the administration.
