Public order violence

From Warta Kota

While I was waiting for a bus on Jl. Juanda IV in Harmoni, Central Jakarta, on the evening of Jan. 19, a public order team from the Kebon Kelapa subdistrict was clearing the street for a new busway route.

Strangely, this operation targeted fried food sellers using pushcarts in front of PT Yanmar, not sidewalk vendors around the BII building.

One of the food sellers, in his attempt to hold on to his cart, was punched in the arm, which caused hot cooking oil to spill out of his frying plan over part of his body.

Still, the unlucky seller got a scolding for being stubborn, rather than help. Fortunately, a security man and a driver from PT Yanmar took the man to a hospital to treat his burns.

The subdistrict public order men should not discriminate when clearing streets of vendors. Were they bribed by the vendors? If the food seller suffers serious injuries, he can take legal action against the team's leader.
