Public Figures Attend Verdict Hearing for Nadiem Makarim
A number of public figures attended the verdict hearing for former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Makarim, at the Corruption Court in the Central Jakarta District Court on Tuesday (30/6/2026). Among those present were former Finance Minister Chatib Basri, lawyer Todung Mulya Lubis, and Otto Cornelis (OC) Kaligis. Several figures from the film and arts community, such as Nazira C. Noer and Mira Lesmana, were also in attendance. The arrival of these figures caused crowding at the entrance to the courtroom, with visitors and security officers jostling with guests wishing to follow the proceedings in person. In addition to the senior figures, Lokataru Executive Director Delpedro Marhaen, a former defendant in the August 2025 riot case, was also present to show support. Before the trial began, Delpedro was seen chatting briefly with Nadiem. An atmosphere of support also came from a number of Gojek drivers. They arrived at the court carrying yellow flowers as a symbol of support for the former minister. Responding to the support he received, Nadiem expressed his appreciation. He said the legal process he is undergoing is not only about him personally, but also represents hope for people seeking justice. ‘Friends, once again I have never regretted my decision to serve the country, and I do not want young people to be afraid to serve the country after this case. What I want is for this to be a golden opportunity, whatever happens to me,’ Nadiem said before the trial began. Nadiem is charged in a case of alleged corruption in the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) licences at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. In this case, the public prosecutor demanded that Nadiem be sentenced to 18 years in prison and pay restitution of Rp5.4 trillion.
