Pubic transportation
Pubic transportation crews deserve better
From Suara Karya
As a user of public transportation in Jakarta, I observe the daily activities of crew members of the various vehicles, particularly city bus drivers and conductors.
With their major role in operating a means of public conveyance to serve large numbers of ordinary people, they deserve proper compensation to ensure their welfare. In reality, they earn barely enough while they have to work from dawn to dusk.
This situation is due to the increasingly tight competition between transportation firms and the ever-growing fleets of public vehicles operating daily. The relevant government agency and corporate management should therefore do something to improve their living conditions.
Apart from their low income, public transportation personnel's working hours should also be regulated to allow them adequate time to rest. In this reform era, the time has come for public transportation companies to enhance the living standards and dignity of their employees.
