Puan warns Middle East conflict could disrupt Indonesia's economy, outlines parliamentary action
House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani has cautioned that the conflict taking place in the Middle East will have significant ramifications on economic stability. The impact will influence economic growth and fiscal resilience to carry out development programmes.
“The impact of the geopolitical conflict currently occurring in the Middle East will affect global economic stability, including Indonesia’s economy,” Puan said in her address to a plenary session at Parliament House, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday 10 March 2026.
Puan noted that amid this situation, there remains public expectation that the state will create employment opportunities and improve welfare. In this regard, Parliament will ensure the fiscal capacity of the 2026 state budget remains intact.
“In this context, the House of Representatives will ensure that the fiscal capacity of the 2026 state budget can maintain and preserve the living standards of the people; public welfare must not decline,” she stated.
Puan said the government must protect fiscal resilience. This is to ensure public welfare.
“Therefore, the government’s budgetary policy must be able to maintain fiscal resilience that can ensure the people continue to have a path towards prosperity, obtain employment, see their income increase, receive quality public services; and feel secure and peaceful,” she concluded.
