Puan Urges UN to Take Action on Iran versus US and Israel Conflict
JAKARTA — The Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, has urged the United Nations to immediately assume its role in maintaining global peace amid escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Puan stated that the international body must act swiftly to ensure the protection of civilians caught in the expanding conflict and to ensure that international law is respected.
“The Indonesian House of Representatives urges the United Nations to assume its role and act immediately in ensuring respect for international law, protection of civilians, and a collective commitment to maintaining global peace and stability,” Puan said during a plenary session at the House of Representatives building on Tuesday, 10 February 2026.
She also expressed condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“Indonesia, as a nation that upholds the principles of independence, lasting peace, and social justice, expresses profound sympathy to the entire Iranian people facing these difficult times,” Puan said.
According to her, the House of Representatives also supports various diplomatic efforts to encourage all parties to exercise restraint and avoid wider conflict.
“The Indonesian House of Representatives supports every diplomatic effort and initiative, whether conducted bilaterally, regionally, or multilaterally, to encourage all parties to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation of conflict; to prioritise respect for national sovereignty; and to resolve disputes peacefully,” she stated.
“The Indonesian House of Representatives also affirms that the Government of the Republic of Indonesia must continue to conduct a free and active foreign policy in safeguarding national interests in a prudent, consistent, and constructive manner in responding to evolving global geopolitical dynamics,” she concluded.
Escalation in the Middle East intensified after Israel and the United States were reported to have attacked Tehran, Iran, on Saturday, 28 February 2026. The attack was reported to have occurred near the office of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. News agencies Tasnim and Fars subsequently confirmed Khamenei’s death.
Heavy casualties have been reported. Israeli forces struck schools in Iran. Most recently, an Iranian oil facility near Tehran was targeted by Israeli strikes, creating a dangerous situation in the densely populated city.
To date, retaliatory attacks are reported to be ongoing and spreading across the Middle Eastern region. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz is affecting the global economy, as the strait serves as a critical passage for major commodities, particularly oil and gas.
