Jakarta (ANTARA) - House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani has urged the government and relevant policymakers to anticipate the weakening exchange rate of the rupiah, which has now reached Rp17,503 per US dollar.

According to her, this rupiah depreciation must be continuously anticipated, even until 2027. The government, she said, must also monitor the global situation impacting this weakening.

“This situation must not allow its effects to eventually make Indonesia slump,” Puan said after leading a plenary session at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Tuesday.

“This also includes anticipating the upcoming state budget and fiscal policies,” she added.

According to her, the exchange rate weakening situation is not only experienced by Indonesia, as it is also related to the global situation. Therefore, she said, the government, including Bank Indonesia, must take action.

Currency and commodity economic observer Ibrahim Assuaibi stated that the rupiah exchange rate weakening is influenced by the escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

“The tensions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to heat up even though it is considered that this war has ended according to Trump (US President Donald Trump),” he said in an audio recording in Jakarta on Tuesday.
