Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, strongly condemned the Israeli military’s arrest of nine Indonesian nationals who are members of Global Peace Convoy Indonesia (GPCI) taking part in the humanitarian mission Global Freedom Flotilla to Gaza.

“Yes, we in the House condemn this matter,” Puan told reporters at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, 21 May 2026.

Puan then urged the government together with related stakeholders to act quickly to secure the release of the nine Indonesians.

“We are asking for the Indonesian nationals who have been detained to be freed immediately, and we are calling on the government and all stakeholders to take the necessary steps as quickly as possible to secure their release,” she said.

Earlier reports indicated that Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono said the government has asked Jordan and Turkey for assistance regarding the condition of the nine Indonesians detained by the Israeli military during the humanitarian mission to Gaza, Palestine.

Sugiono said Jordan and Turkey have diplomatic relations with Israel. Thus, the two countries can communicate Indonesia’s message.

“First, we must obtain accurate information about the position and situation of our compatriots who have been detained,” Sugiono told reporters at the Parliament Complex, Senayan.

“Then, we will also instruct our representatives to convey via our partners in Jordan and Turkey, who can communicate directly with Israel to ensure our citizens are treated properly,” he added.

He noted that the actions by the Israeli military have violated humanitarian principles.

Sugiono assured that the Indonesian government continues to coordinate and monitor the nine Indonesians detained by the Israeli military. He hopes the nine Indonesians can return to Indonesia safely.

“Then, be processed as quickly as possible for them to return or be deported to Indonesia in good health and not lacking in anything,” he concluded.
