Puan States Presidential Candidate Requirement of Minimum Two Fractions is Still a Discourse, Not Final

The Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, stated that the discourse regarding the option for presidential and vice-presidential nomination requirements to be supported by at least two parliamentary parties or factions remains informal for now.

According to Puan, this discourse, along with the proposal for a 5 per cent parliamentary threshold, is still limited to discussions between parties. She noted that this matter will be officially reviewed during DPR meetings.

“The idea that the presidential election will be supported by only two political parties is still in the process of informal discourse, so it is not yet official,” P/uan said at the parliamentary complex on Tuesday (22/9).

Puan mentioned that informal discussions regarding the Election Bill will continue among the factions in the DPR. She also stated that the PDI-P is ready to be involved.

Puan explained that the PDI-P has actually been invited several times to discuss the Bill. However, the discussions did not cover the option of the 5 per cent threshold.

“We have actually been invited to speak, but not in that specific forum. Regarding whether the presidential election will only involve two parties, we have also been invited to talk, but not in that forum,” she said.

“So, these are indeed informal discussions being held by the parties. Regarding the proposal for presidential and vice-presidential candidates from two parties, yes, that two-party idea is still informal,” Puan added.
