Puan Requests Government to Anticipate Conditions Burdening Public Ahead of Eid
Jakarta — The Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) Puan Maharani has requested that the government anticipate conditions to ensure that citizens do not bear additional burdens during and ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah/2026.
Puan emphasised that the House of Representatives will also undertake oversight functions regarding government policies ahead of Eid.
“We must anticipate and implement the best measures to ensure that there are no unforeseen issues that burden and strain the public ahead of Eid, whether relating to transportation, food security, and other matters,” Puan said at the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday (10 March 2026).
“Furthermore, other matters related to Eid issues must not burden or strain the public, as this is indeed the government’s responsibility,” she added.
The government has implemented various policies ahead of Eid al-Fitr. One government policy encourages regional leaders to organise cheap markets for the public.
Interior Minister Tito Karnavian unveiled the purpose of this policy, which aims to anticipate potential price increases in food and staple goods ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah.
“To ensure sufficient supplies and affordable prices. If prices rise, we will intervene through cheap market initiatives,” Tito said during the Coordination Meeting on Inflation Control and Regional Government Preparedness for Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah/2026 celebrations, according to a press statement issued on Monday (9 March 2026).
Tito also requested regional heads to coordinate with the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda), distributors, business associations, and market administrators to ensure that supplies remain adequate and prices remain affordable.
Regional heads have also been asked to remain alert in their respective areas, rather than undertaking Umrah pilgrimages whilst the public is on extended leave during Eid al-Fitr.
Tito reminded regional heads that they must be present at several critical moments ahead of and during Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
He stated that regional heads are the highest-ranking officials in their territories and serve as holders of authority and makers of policy responsible for public services.
“This is indeed the peak period of activities to ensure the public can carry out the Eid celebrations with controlled homecoming and return traffic, stable prices, and well-maintained and well-managed tourist destinations,” Tito said.
