Jakarta — The Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, opened the DPR’s plenary session for the opening of the fourth parliamentary term of 2025–2026 by raising the issue of Middle East conflict following attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran.

She stated that the world is witnessing geopolitical conflict using military force. The tensions reflect dynamics in international relations fraught with strategic interests, regional security dominance, and global power competition.

“The conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran does not merely reflect competing interests at the regional level, but also depicts a major challenge to the governance of global affairs in the future,” Puan said at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday.

According to her, the escalating military actions have led to a collective understanding that the use of military force occurring at present has disregarded the principle of respecting state sovereignty.

She also noted that the escalation of conflict demonstrates the dominance of certain nations over others, disregards the role of multilateral institutions in preventing wider conflict, and reflects the failure of the global security system in guaranteeing a balance of interests among nations.

This situation, Puan continued, reaffirms the importance of strengthening international law, the role of international institutions in maintaining peace, justice and global stability, and the right of states to uphold their sovereignty.

The DPR RI supports every effort and diplomatic initiative to encourage all parties to exercise restraint and avoid wider escalation of conflict, prioritising respect for state sovereignty, and resolving disputes peacefully.

At the same time, the DPR RI urged the United Nations to take swift action in upholding respect for international law, protecting civilians, and maintaining global peace and stability.

“The DPR RI also emphasises that the Indonesian government must continue to implement an independent and active foreign policy in prudently, consistently, and constructively safeguarding national interests in response to evolving global geopolitical dynamics,” she said.

Puan also expressed condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the conflict.
