Puan Maharani Urges MPs to Maintain Decorum Ahead of 14 August Annual Session
House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani has requested all members to maintain their attitude, focus and solemnity during the series of Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the Joint Session of the DPR and the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) scheduled for Friday, 14 August 2026. The statement was a response to an evaluation of the previous year’s session to avoid public scrutiny regarding spontaneous expressions by parliamentarians.
Puan assured that all session participants would be more self-aware in respecting the highest state forum. This was particularly emphasised for when the President delivers the state address and presents the 2027 State Budget and Financial Note.
‘God willing, on the day, we will all be more introspective, more solemn, better able to conduct ourselves, and more focused in following the state event,’ Puan said during a press conference at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday (12/8).
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician explained that the atmosphere of the previous year’s session actually remained solemn during the speech agenda. The outburst of joyful expressions from legislators occurred spontaneously only after the entire series of official state speeches had been concluded.
Puan considered the expression of joy to be a natural response in welcoming the 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia. However, she reminded that such expressions of happiness should be placed proportionally without diminishing the honour of the official state agenda.
Regarding organisational readiness, Puan disclosed that technical preparations for the MPR Annual Session and the DPR-DPD Joint Session had currently reached approximately 80 percent. Technical coordination is being finalised together with the DPD and MPR until the day of the event.
Puan urged all attending parties to avoid anything that could potentially disrupt the smooth running of the session, from the opening until the complete delivery of the 2027 State Budget. She expressed hope that this year’s independence celebration would proceed safely, smoothly, and with a full sense of nationhood.
‘In welcoming Independence Day, we can celebrate it joyfully. Hopefully, this year we can carry it out joyfully, safely, smoothly, and remain solemn,’ she concluded.
