House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani has officially opened the Fifth Session of the 2025–2026 Sitting Period during a Plenary Session held at the Nusantara Building on Tuesday, 12 May 2026. In her opening speech, Puan emphasised the DPR’s focus on legislative agendas and strategic oversight that directly touch upon the interests of the people.

In the field of legislation, Puan stated that the DPR, together with the government, will continue discussions at the first level on several priority draft laws. The four bills include the Draft Law on Amendments to Law Number 4 of 2023 concerning the Development and Strengthening of the Financial Sector, the Draft Law on International Civil Law, the Draft Law on Amendments to Law Number 16 of 1997 concerning Statistics, and the Draft Law on Industrial Design.

“The DPR RI, together with the government, will continue discussions at the first level on several draft laws,” Puan said during the plenary session.

In addition to the legislative function, Puan affirmed that the DPR’s oversight function will be strengthened regarding various issues developing in society. She mentioned that there are 16 strategic issues that are the main focus of the DPR in this sitting period.

The first oversight focus is directed towards guarantees of public safety, national security, and integration of population data services. Some of these include evaluating the land transportation system for public safety, strengthening the security system for TNI troops in conflict areas, optimising the digitalisation of E-KTP in public services, and comprehensively resolving illegal mining and agrarian conflicts.

Puan also highlighted the importance of the integrity of law enforcement apparatus and strengthening national economic stability. According to her, the DPR will oversee the implementation of strict sanctions for apparatus who violate professional ethics, maintaining the balance of prices and availability of basic commodities, accelerating sustainable practices in SOEs, and promoting the development of industrial zones based on agricultural and fisheries downstreaming.

In the field of social protection, the DPR gives special attention to child protection and victims of sexual violence. Oversight will be focused on child care institutions, boarding educational institutions, fulfilling the rights of victims of criminal acts of sexual violence, and evaluating the use of the national single social and economic data as the basis for contribution aid recipients.

In addition, the DPR will also oversee the implementation of computer-based written exams in the national university selection, ensuring additional quotas for fuel and LPG for energy-scarce areas, strengthening the rupiah exchange rate, and the government’s readiness to face uncertainties in world oil prices due to global geopolitical situations.

On that occasion, Puan also conveyed the results of an audience with the Alliance of United Workers’ and People’s Movement during the recess period. That meeting discussed reforms to the national wage system up to agrarian reform policies, which she said will soon be followed up by the relevant council working bodies.

Closing her speech, Puan officially opened the Fifth Session of the 2025–2026 Sitting Period, which will run until 21 July 2026.

“With the saying bismillahirrahmanirrahim, on behalf of the DPR leadership, I hereby announce to all the Indonesian people that the Fifth Session of the 2025–2026 Sitting Period begins from Tuesday, 12 May 2026 until 21 July 2026,” she asserted.

Puan also reminded all council members to carry out the people’s mandate with full responsibility in order to fight for the welfare of Indonesian society.
