Puan Maharani: Indonesia and India Share Responsibility for Regional Stability
The Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, stated that Indonesia and India share a mutual responsibility to maintain regional stability.
Puan Maharani made these remarks during her speech while receiving the state visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the DPR Building in Jakarta on Tuesday.
“As the world is characterised by increasing rivalry between major powers, supply chain disruptions, food and energy crises, and the impacts of climate change, Indonesia and India have a shared responsibility to maintain regional stability and strengthen development cooperation,” she said.
According to Puan, amidst rising global geopolitical and geo-economic volatility, nations must act to safeguard sovereignty and national interests, while ensuring that development delivers justice and prosperity to the people.
She believes that cooperation between nations must continue to be strengthened to realise a better, more peaceful, and inclusive world order.
“Therefore, the Indonesian House of Representatives believes that close synergy between legislative and executive institutions is an essential asset in strengthening inter-country cooperation amidst global dynamics,” she added.
Puan further noted that parliamentary diplomacy does not merely complement government diplomacy, but also expands the space for dialogue, builds mutual understanding, strengthens trust, and encourages the emergence of political support.
Puan expressed her appreciation for the Indian Parliament, which established the India-Indonesia Parliamentary Friendship Group in February 2026.
This group is expected to work closely with the Indonesia-India Parliamentary Bilateral Cooperation Group, which was formed in January 2025.
Prime Minister Modi visited the Indonesian parliament building as part of his state visit to Jakarta. On this occasion, PM Modi also delivered a speech before members of the Indonesian parliament.
The event was attended by President Prabowo Subianto, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Speaker of the MPR RI Ahmad Muzani, Speaker of the DPD RI Sultan B. Najamudin, and members of the Red and White Cabinet.
