Puan Maharani: Indonesia and India Share Responsibility for Regional Stability

House Speaker Puan Maharani stated that Indonesia and India have a shared responsibility to maintain regional stability. “At a time when the world is marked by increasing great power rivalries, supply chain disruptions, food and energy crises, and the impacts of climate change, Indonesia and India have a joint responsibility to safeguard regional stability and strengthen development cooperation,” Puan said in her speech while receiving Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit at the Parliament Building in Jakarta on Tuesday. She stressed that amidst rising geopolitical and geo-economic turmoil, the state must be present to protect sovereignty and national interests, while ensuring that development delivers justice and prosperity for the people. Puan believes that cooperation between nations must be continuously strengthened to realise a better, more peaceful, and inclusive world order. “Therefore, the House of Representatives believes that close synergy between legislative and executive institutions is crucial capital in strengthening inter-state cooperation amidst global dynamics,” she added. Puan noted that parliamentary diplomacy not only complements government diplomacy but also expands space for dialogue, builds mutual understanding, strengthens trust, and encourages political support. She also appreciated the Indian parliament for establishing the India-Indonesia Parliamentary Friendship Group in February 2026. The group is expected to work closely with the Bilateral Cooperation Group between the Indonesian House of Representatives and the Indian Parliament, which was formed in January 2025. Prime Minister Modi visited the Indonesian parliament building during his state visit to Jakarta and delivered a speech before Indonesian parliamentarians. The event was attended by President Prabowo Subianto, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, People’s Consultative Assembly Speaker Ahmad Muzani, Regional Representative Council Speaker Sultan B. Najamudin, and members of the Red and White Cabinet.
