Puan Demands Thorough Investigation into Death of Resident in Pejompongan

The Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, has requested that the police thoroughly investigate the death of a resident in Pejompongan during a riot that occurred following a demonstration in front of the DPR/MPR Building on Thursday night, 27 August.

“We request that everything be investigated by law enforcement thoroughly; we want to see what happened and ensure it is resolved as best as possible,” Puan stated at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Tuesday (1/9).

Puan did not provide specific details when questioned regarding the presence of the GRIB Jaya mass organisation during the unrest. She reiterated her demand for the police to investigate the death of the resident to the fullest extent.

“From the beginning, we have requested that aspirations be expressed in an orderly manner and that no riots or vandalism occur. Therefore, we ask the relevant authorities to investigate and resolve this matter as effectively as possible,” she said.

Polda Metro Jaya confirmed that there was one fatality resulting from the riots that took place following the protest in front of the DPR/MPR Building on Thursday night, 27 August.

“First, we express our condolences for the loss of one of our citizens,” said the Head of Public Relations for Polda Metro Jaya, Kombes Budi Hermanto, during a press conference on Friday (28/8).

Budi noted that the incident began when officers received information regarding ongoing unrest in the Pejompala area, West Jakarta. He admitted that at the time, officers were unable to immediately evacuate the victim because the situation was not yet secure.

After the victim was successfully evacuated, Budi stated that the man was unconscious and was immediately rushed to the hospital. “The nearest hospital was the Mintoharjo Navy Hospital, but while receiving treatment at the hospital, the individual passed away,” he explained.
