Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives Puan Maharani has cautioned that the conflict occurring in the Middle East region has the potential to affect global economic stability, including Indonesia’s economy.

“The impact of the geopolitical conflict currently taking place in the Middle East will affect global economic stability, including Indonesia’s economy,” Puan said during her address at the opening of the Fourth Session of the 2025-2026 legislative year at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 10 March.

According to her, the conflict will affect oil prices, transportation, commodity prices, the rupiah’s exchange rate against the United States dollar, supply chains, economic growth, and fiscal capacity in implementing development programmes.

At the same time, Puan noted that the public still harbours great hopes for the state to create employment opportunities, increase people’s incomes, improve public access to education and healthcare services, and strengthen the people’s economy.

In this context, she stated that the House of Representatives would ensure that the fiscal capacity of the 2026 state budget could continue to protect and maintain the standard of living of the people and prevent a decline in public welfare.

“Therefore, the government’s budgetary policy must be able to maintain fiscal resilience that ensures that the people continue to have a path towards prosperity. Obtaining employment, increasing their income, receiving quality public services, and feeling safe and secure,” she said.

During this occasion, Puan assessed that the conflict between the United States-Israel and Iran reflects not only a clash of interests at the regional level but also represents a major challenge for future global governance.

This situation, according to her, reaffirms the importance of strengthening international law, the role of international institutions in maintaining peace, justice, and world stability, and nations’ rights to maintain their sovereignty.

“On behalf of the Leadership and Members of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, we express our profound condolences for the death of His Excellency Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Puan said.

Puan urged the United Nations to take a role and act immediately to uphold respect for international law, protect civilians, and maintain shared commitment to global peace and stability.

“The House of Representatives also affirms that the Government of the Republic of Indonesia must continue to implement a free and active foreign policy to safeguard national interests wisely, consistently, and constructively in responding to the evolving global geopolitical dynamics,” she said.
