State-owned construction and investment firm PT PP (Persero) Tbk (PTPP) is leading a joint operation (KSO) to build the 52-kilometre Stage III Coal Hauling Road in Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra, with a project contract value of Rp970 billion.

PTPP holds a 65 per cent stake in the KSO, while the project, which uses a design-and-build scheme, is targeted to undergo a construction period of 540 calendar days. The contract agreement was signed on 5 August 2026.

“PTPP is committed to making the best contribution to the construction of the Stage III Coal Hauling Road,” said PTPP Corporate Secretary Joko Raharjo in an official statement received in Jakarta on Monday.

He said the construction of the hauling road is intended to support connectivity and the smooth logistics of coal from mining concessions to unloading points or ports.

The project scope includes the construction of a 52-kilometre hauling road along with a number of supporting structures, including overpasses, box culverts, and box underpasses.

According to the company, the road is expected to provide a more efficient, reliable, and safe land transport route for coal haulage and to support the smooth flow of the energy supply chain, particularly in South Sumatra.

During construction, the company plans to use drone-based land mapping and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR).

The company will also implement digitalisation of quality, health, safety, and environment (QHSE) inspections, barcode-based logistics monitoring, and a real-time work progress monitoring system.

Other planned technologies include Building Information Modeling (BIM), Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and an integrated project dashboard.

Joko explained that the use of these technologies is aimed at supporting the effectiveness and measurability of construction execution.

“With the experience and capabilities we possess, supported by innovation and the use of technology in the construction process, we are optimistic that this project can be carried out with an emphasis on quality, timeliness, and work safety,” he said.

PTPP noted that crossing conditions and the length of the project route, which is located in a remote area, are among the challenges in carrying out the road works.

According to the company, these conditions require adequate communication and safety system support during the construction period, including the implementation of safety procedures and work quality control.
