Bandarlampung, Lampung (ANTARA News) - State-owned plantation company PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) VII has set itself the target of producing 174,500 tons of sugar this year.

The sugar production would originate from the company`s two business units, namely Bungamayang in North Lampung and Cintamanis in North Sumatra, the company`s spokesman, Sonny Soediastanto, said here on Wednesday.

He said the Bungamayang business unit was expected to produce 107,000 tons of sugar and the Cintamanis business unit 67,500 tons this year.

The two business units produced 150,162 tons of sugar last year.

The Bungamayang and Cintamanis business units had an average annual production of 100,000 tons and 60,000 tons each, he said.

"PTPN VII aims to increase its sugar production to help the country achieve self sufficiency in sugar by 2010," he said.

Indonesia`s sugar production stood at 2.1 million tons last year, well below its sugar consumption estimated at 3 million tons.

PTPN VII is also engaged in rubber, oil palm and tea plantations in the three provinces of Lampung, South Sumatra and Bengkulu. The plantations cover an area of 150,000 hectares.

To date, the company employs an estimated 18,000 workers. (*)
